Can't Live With 'Em, Can't Live Without 'Em

In spite of hurting Monday night after I got home from work, I got up early Tuesday morning and went for a quick little 75 mile ride.  I met Randall at the Haws Creek store and we had breakfast.  When getting ready to leave, the lady working at the store/diner told us to be careful and watch for bear.  I was halfway out the door and backed up to inquire a bit more.  She said that there had been a lot more bear sightings this summer, I assume from the drought.  She said one of her regular customers, an elderly gentleman, just last week had a mother and two cubs eating what was left of his garden.  I assured her that we would watch out for them, Randall and I have both rode up on several bear before in our years of riding, but they never fail to provide excitement!

Then she added, "which way are you going?"  I told her and she said she lived back a mile past the iron bridge (I love that old bridge) and there have been four people who have seen a large mountain lion in the area.  Now that would be some excitement I have not experienced.  So Randall and I did what any other dumbasses would do after hearing this.  We split up and rode back solo.  haha

On my way back I did run across a friendly little chap, a diamondback rattlesnake.  He was very polite, stopping to pose for a couple of pictures before proceeding to vanish into the plush carpet of the forest.

I'm still not completely over my surgery, it still hurts a little bit to ride.  The MTX has slowed the healing down so much, I should have been completely healed a month ago.  I feel no pain from with the exception of riding, and my doctor said it will continue to get better, just slowly.  Sigh ... life with RA medication.  Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em.

OK, so you can choose bear, big cat or snake? Do I have that right. Yes, I can live without them!! I can live without all three of them. They can stay in their neck of the woods and me in mine...thank you very much. We also saw a snake today...black one but not sure what kind of snack. It apparently lives in our neighbors yard. See, that snake knows my rules..you live on your side, I'll live on mine. Hoping your surgery completes its healing cycle for you.

What happened to the RA rebel? I am certain a year ago you wouldn’t have gone home. You would have thought you would outrun the bear and the mountain lion if they came your way. J/K. :-) Well at least the rattlesnake was friendly…I know about the slow healing so I do everything in my power not to get sick. It is not always easy when our immune systems are so compromised. Take care, my friend, until next time.

Oh yes the mountain lion would give me pause. They like to chase fast things and bring them down. The bears I have dealt with while hiking but mountain lions take the trail right off the list. Frankly, after seeing a few black bears on the trail I am apt to take them off the list also. Too much excitement for me.
Hope you heal totally in time for some nice fall rides. Time to get out those maps you had out last year.

Deb, the snakes and bears are no big deal. Let me rephrase that, unless it's a water moccasin, snakes with are no big deal. I would not want to taunt a mountain lion. It's good that you have your snakes trained in your neighborhood. lol

Lana, I would like to say that I am wiser now, but we both know that is not the case! I ran across a small adult bear last year not far from where the store is. Due to my lack of riding from surgery this year, I haven't seen one yet. Honestly hope I never see a mountain lion back in the woods.

Mary, thats what Randall and I were talking about as we walked out of the store, if we see one on a trail back in the woods a mountain lion and a KTM would be a good matchup. On an open road I wouldn't worry about them though. I have a great 2 or 3 day ride planned for early October. Have a couple of good 1 day rides too. Just need my body to cooperate now. Hope you get in some good miles this fall.

I don't know why, but i just had this vision "KTM vs Mountain lion" next up on Nitro Circus. Watch Travis take on mother nature, next week Travis wil jump six monster trucks while riding on the back of a mountain lion. Could be a good show.
Good to hear things are going well. Hope you and Randall can get in some good rides this fall.

lol Phil, you know if anyone could pull it off it would be TP ... unless he talked Streetbike Tommy in to it for him. Maybe while swinging a rattlesnake high up over his head too. Have some rides planned ... just need to heal up a little bit more. I'm feeling better but still a tad painful yet. Hope you're doing well these days. Talk to you later.
