I bought a new motorcycle in November (KTM 525 XCW) and have started setting it up for dual sport rides. The day after christmas, Randall and I went on a 125 mile dual sport ride. It was an amazing day all in all, it was 77 degrees, I was off work and rode all day long. We rode across 3 mountains and literally around a lake (trail within about 8 feet of the edge of about 3 miles of lake), got caught in a thundershower and finished the ride back to the truck in the dark. I don't think I have ever had a better day after Christmas in my life!

After being diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in 2004, I pretty much thought my riding days were gone. I have tried to do some rides with varying degrees of success (and quite a bit of pain), but was introduced in 2008 to dual sport riding. Dual sport combines dirt roads, fire and old logging roads, a little bit of asphalt and single track trail. The bike must be street legal and tagged with insurance, but all of my buddies (see photo above blog archive) and myself ride KTM 4 strokes with dual sport kits to make them street legal. The advantage of having a hardcore off road bike for this purpose is huge in my opinion. I looked seriously at a Honda XR650L before settling on my KTM 525 XCW. The KTM puts out more hp plus it is 75 lbs lighter so when hitting the single track trail, there is no comparison.
One thing is for sure, this beats sitting around the house watching tv anyday!
